I have a question concerning the carbon footprint for \"processing\". Is the carbon footprint of the material allready included in the carbon footprint of a process?

Hello,

this is a goo question. It depends on the datasets you are using. You are probably refering to the datasets shipped within \'Umberto for Carbon Footprint\', which are from the ecoinvent 2.2 database.

Ecoinvent handles the use of materials in conjunction with processing as follows:

Plastics: The processing processes like \'injection moulding\', \'blow moulding\', \'calendering\' etc. (see p. 171 ecoinvent Report 11_II_Plastics) are used in conjunction with the the raw material inputs. For the output of 1 kg extruded LDPE foil, an input of 1,025 kg of the material \"polyethylene, LDPE, granulate, at plant\" and an input of 1,025 kg of the processing process \"extrusion, plastic film\" is required (see p. 172 ecoinvent Report 11_II_Plastics). Mind that the input factor that accounts for the losses in the process (above: 1,025) varies for the different processing processes. The factors for the individual processing processes can be found in the ecoinvent documentation.

Metals: The metal processing processes also do not include the material. For example, for the hot rolling of steel sheet you would use the material dataset \'steel, converter, unalloyed, at plant\' and the processing dataset \'hot rolling, steel\'. Both processes are used in the same output quantity ( 1 kg material / 1 kg processing process. The material losses in the process are accounted for in the processing process. In the above example you will find an input flow of 0,05 kg \'steel, converter, unalloyed, at plant\' with the comment \"Only amount of material that is going to leave the system a s scrap to recycling\". For further details see from p. 171 ecoinvent Report 10_XV_Metals Processing.

Paper and Cardboard: As with Plastics processing (see above) the making of, for example, cardboard boxes requires the input of raw material with a specific input factor. For details see ecoinvent Report 11_III_Paper_and_Board.

I don\'t know how other databases you might be using are handling the inclusion of materials and/or processing. Please refer to the respective documentation.
