General Umberto NXT CO2 / New version Umberto NXT CO2
« on: April 07, 2015, 13:00 »
We have released a new version (7.1.8.156) of Umberto NXT CO2.

This update is free-of-charge for subscribers to the Umberto Maintenance and Support Service. These license holders are also notified directly by e-mail.

This new release is an intermediate update. It brings a number of new features and usability improvements. Some bugs have been fixed.

Changelog:
  • Export input/output inventories for the complete model or model sections as process specification to Excel.
  • Import process specification directly from Excel. Together with the above feature, models can be encapsulated as processes
  • Assign same place to multiple input/output flow entries in process specification
  • 'Allocations' tab in process specification only visible, if allocation on process level is required
  • Show usage of material: view list in which element of the project a material is being used
  • Streamlined activation mechanism for license
  • Start page and 'Enter/Edit License' dialog now shows overview of installed databases and validity dates
  • New dialog in case master material databases are not installed
  • Updated user manual and online help
  • Some bugs fixed

We recommend to install the update and always run the latest version.

The latest trial version of Umberto NXT can be obtained from our webpage.

PE International has released the updated GaBi '14 data in December 2014.

This is to let our users of GaBi data in Umberto know that we are at present preparing the databases to be used with Umberto NXT LCA and Umberto NXT Universal. We will be releasing the new software and the updated GaBi data in Umberto NXT in April 2014 (subject to confirmation).

The release will also include the Food&Feed database announced here.

We will keep you posted as soon as we have a confirmed release date. Our registered users will also be informed directly by e-mail.

The continuation of this thread can be found in the ecoinvent forum. The original poster dmutz has raised the question in the ecoinvent forum 'Differences between ecoinvent v2 & v3'.

An interesting blog post from our colleagues at PRé. Tommie Ponsioen writes about 'Why My LCA Scores Radically Changed After The ecoinvent Update'.

Worth a read also for Umberto NXT users working with ecoinvent v3.1 data.

Hello dmutz,

I can confirm your observation that there are no characterization factors present for the elementary exchanges '1,4-butanediol' and 'Cadmium, ion' for the USEtox w/o LT impact assessment method in ecoinvent v2.2. However these CF exist in the current ecoinvent v3.1 database.
In contrast, 'Mercury', does have a characterization factor in the USEtox w/o LT method, both in the old ecoinvent v2.2 database (2010) as well as in the current ecoinvent v3.1 database.

When I see such a phenomenon, I typically check the LCIA factors in my local Umberto NXT LCA installation first (I'm lucky to have both version still installed). After verifying it in Umberto, I then check whether the values I have locally are identical to the ones provided directly by ecoinvent. I typically look directly in the online database at ecoinvent.org. ecoinvent v2.2 data is still available.

Now, for the issue you addressed: Looking at USEtox w/o LT the elementary exchanges '1,4-butanediol' and 'Cadmium, ion' do not exist, while 'Mercury' exists. See attached screen grab (I have blacked out the values just in case this would be a license infringement ... although I think these CF are in the public domain).

My guess is that the USEtox w/o LT method was not correctly implemented by ecoinvent back in 2010, and that they corrected it when moving to ecoinvent v3. However, I didn't find a mention of this in the change report.

Maybe you can get a confirmation on this directly from the colleagues at ecoinvent.org.

General Umberto NXT CO2 / Version release Umberto NXT 7.1.8
« on: December 18, 2014, 08:03 »
We have released a new version ( 7.1.8 ) of Umberto NXT CO2.

Users of the software can obtain the updated version directly via their local Umberto NXT installation. The update notifier should exhibit a message and a download link on the software start page. Registered license holders have also been notified directly by e-mail.

This new release is an intermediate update. It brings a number of usability improvements. Some bugs have been fixed.

Changelog:
  • The default allocation method for new processes is now "Physical". In case you use physical allocation for reference flows with differing unit types you will get a warning for this process (physical allocation is only meaningful if the unit types of the reference flows match) and are invited to change to another allocation method.
  • "Use Entry as Manual Flow" now uses coefficient from linear specification where applicable
  • Manual flows in process specification can now be created even if there is already a calculated flow for the same material
  • Linear coefficients can now be 0 - this can be used to deactivate parts of your models etc. and gives you more flexibility
  • Value for the material property GWP is now shown and edited scaled to the display unit of the material (e.g. this allows you to enter energy costs per kWh instead of MJ, etc.)
  • Drag & Drop enhancements for process specification
  • Search Material dialog: You can now add more than one material in one step to the process specification
  • Several bugs fixed

We recommend to install the update and run the latest version 7.1.8.

Should there be any questions, please contact the Umberto help desk at support@umberto.de
