ecoinvent has officially released version v3.2 on Nov 30, 2015 (see announcement).

There are many new and updated LCI datasets in ecoinvent v3.2 (2015). Read here about the main changes and additions to the database.

We are now working to import the ecoinvent v3.2 data in order to provide the datasets as database in Umberto NXT LCA and Umberto NXT Universal. We will inform our customers as soon as the new data is available to them for download. In the meantime, users with valid existing ecoinvent subscription can browse ecoinvent v3.2 datasets online.

Der Datensatz 'straw, stand alone production' ist unter seinem Vorgängernamen 'straw, from straw areas, at field' im ecoinvent Report No. 17 (2007) Bioenergy dokumentiert. Dort heisst es auf Seite 28 im Kapitel 2 'Grass': "The grass inventories included data refer to grass from permanent and temporary grassland ... Straw, from straw areas, was included as potential grass source for the energy production."

Dort heisst es auf Seite 131 im Abschnitt Allocations: "For the cereals wheat, rye and barley, allocations were made between the production of grains and of straw (...) all inputs and outputs were allocated on the basis of an economic factor, except for the inputs listed in Tab 14.5 for which allocations to grains or straw was clear-cut".

Hello Bruno,

1. Is Umberto NXT Universal compatible with the following operating systems: Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP (SP3) ?

All products of the Umberto NXT family are compatible with Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista.

Umberto NXT has also been tested with Windows 10 (scheduled for release July 29, 2015) and no issues have been detected.

We do not support Windows XP (SP3) any more, since Microsoft has ended the support for this operating system in 2014 and does not provide updates and security fixes any longer.

We have updated the scripting reference (documentation of the scripting feature) for Umberto NXT Universal. You can access it in the Umberto Download Center on our web page (registration required).

Should you be interested to learn more about the use of IronPython scripting for specification of processes in Umberto NXT models, please contact us.

The ecoinvent Centre has announced the upcoming release of version 3.2 of the ecoinvent LCI database (read official announcement here).

Many datasets will see updates, new datasets will be added (complete list still undisclosed). What is known already, is that we can expect Chinese electricity data and datasets on refrigerated transport (important for food LCAs).

The staff at ecoinvent Centre is apparently listening to the customer voice: market groups for Europe, North America and some countries that have a regional breakdown will be introduced. This will finally mend the issue that most users faced when woking with European unit datasets with electricity mixes for all countries.

For users of Umberto NXT LCA and Umberto NXT Universal: as soon as we receive the raw data from ecoinvent, we will start converting it to an Umberto NXT master database. This process may take up to 3 months, but we will try to be as quick as possible. Expect the release of ecoinvent v3.2 in Umberto NXT in the second half of 2015. Customers with a valid Maintenance and Support Service will be the first to receive the update.

For more information, please contact our Umberto customer service team.

General / New version Umberto NXT Efficiency
« on: May 12, 2015, 15:33 »
We have released a new version (7.1.8.176) of Umberto NXT Efficiency.

This update is free-of-charge for all subscribers to the Umberto Maintenance and Support Service. These license holders are also notified directly by e-mail.

This new release is an intermediate update. It brings a number of new features and usability improvements.

Changelog:
  • Installed master databases can now be individually enabled/disabled in a project. Databases that you don't actively use are ignored in searches so that relevant datasets can be found faster and easier
  • The "Find Usage" command opens a list with all occurrences of a flow in the models of the project
  • ecoinvent v2.2 database with GWP100a values as material properties. Calculate carbon footprints by using the elementary and intermediate flows with CO2 rucksack data from ecoinvent database. Note: update your license in the "Edit/Enter License" dialog to use this database.
  • Some bugs have been fixed.

We recommend to install the update and always run the latest version.

The latest trial version of Umberto NXT can be obtained from our webpage.

Should there be any questions, please contact the Umberto help desk at support@umberto.de

Hello Marco,

since you write about " Stock Type", I reckon you are actually specifying a material with a quantity in a place (circle element). This is not necessary. Specifying stocks is used in different modelling situations.

There are "only" two simple things you have to do to make a model calculate:
1) specify all processes (squares). Make sure that you enter the process description with flows and coefficients on the input and output side. To verify that a process is correctly specified, the red marker symbol must have disappeared.
2) specify one manual flow only. This is typically the product flow (one unit of product) or any other given flow. Only one flow in the life cycle model should purple.

Fulfilling these two requirements should lead to a calculable carbon footprnt model. After calculating the model all arrows where the calculation has yielded flows are shown in black. Branches that remain gray have not been calculated.

Stating to manual (purple) flows will in most cases lead to an over-specification. All flows should be calculated from the one given (manual) start flow.

I strongly recommend that yor have a look at the tutorial, where there is a step-by-step description of an example carbon footprint calculation.

Should you need help in getting your first carbon footprint model to work, please contact support@umberto.de (you can attach the .umberto file to your e-mail inquiry so that our help desk can have a look).

Enjoy your work with Umberto NXT!

Peter

We have updated the GaBi LCI databases in Umberto NXT to GaBi 2014 (Service Pack 27).

This is the major annual update for users of the GaBi databases. All data has been updated to represent the year 2014.

Changes made to the data in the 2014 version are described in two documents:

Users of Umberto NXT with GaBi LCI databases will be provided with information on how to run the update and a link to download the databases.

Users of our software tools Umberto NXT LCA and Umberto NXT Universal have the choice of working with ecoinvent v3.1 data or with GaBi LCI data depending on their specific data requirements.

GaBi '14 databases (aka SP27) are now shipped as integrated LCI database in Umberto NXT LCA and Umberto NXT Universal, for those customers who have signed up for GaBi database licenses. Existing users receive the update directly.

Also, if you are doing a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study in the agricultural sector the GaBi Extension Database XX: Food & Feed might be worth a look. The new database includes over 350 datasets representing the most commonly used food and feed products in different geographical regions:

  • Crops and animals, e.g. corn, tapioca, rapeseeds, beef, sheep
  • Manufacturing of food products (incl. dairy, starch, and grain mill products, sugar, meat, chocolate, animal feed, vegetable and animal oils, etc.) and by-products
  • European production and import mixes for major commodities like sugar beet, rapeseed, corn, soybeans and wheat

Contact us, if you want to know more about GaBi databases in Umberto NXT.
